Union Endicott High School

Flood Protection

Project Summary

This project involved a study and final design for providing flood protection for the Union Endicott High School in Endicott, NY. The southwest portion of the high school, located within the 100-year floodplain of the Susquehanna River, has experienced chronic flooding problems during high river stages. This project investigated permanent alternatives to eliminate future flooding of the facility.
The project included: hydraulic modeling of the Susquehanna River, assessment of floodplain impacts, investigation of flood prevention alternatives including concrete T-walls, flood proofing of existing buildings, FloodBreaks automatic flood gates, Flood Control America removable barrier walls at access openings, and design of interior flood removal systems. Additionally, the project included coordination with State and Federal resource agencies including FEMA, NYSEMO, NYSDEC and the USCOE.

The final design phase is complete for utilizing permanent concrete T-walls to the 500 year flood elevation. Griffiths also provided full time construction observation services.

Floodwall was in place for 2011 flood and functioned as designed saving millions of dollars in damage to the Union-Endicott school district.
